Lightning sparks house fire
Old Saybrook (WTNH) -- Lightning is being blamed for starting a house fire in Old Saybrook. Firefighters tell us that lightening struck a house on Beachview Avenue and ignited the flames just after noon.
Two people inside at the time, but they escaped after their smoke alarm went off.
People living in the attic of that house have been displaced, due to the extensive damage.

Fire at Pomfret school
Pomfret (WTNH) -- Firefighters had to put out a fire at a school in Pomfret this morning. Firefighters say they were called to the Pomfret Community School on Pomfret street just before 10 a.m. because a fire alarm had gone off.
When firefighters got there they say they saw heavy black smoke coming from the nurse's office. They were quickly able to put it out. Due to the quick response the fire was contained to one room. The nurses's office has suffered heavy smoke damage. There was moderate smoke damage in two other rooms and the hallway.

Fire chief to retire after 44 years
Southington Fire Chief Richard McDonough's last day was Friday after dedicating 44 years to serving Southington. Twelve of those years were spent as the fire department's highest ranking official and eight were spent as assistant fire chief.
His father, volunteer Fire Captain Bernard McDonough, urged him to apply for a paid firefighter job in 1964. It was not a profession Richard McDonough says he dreamed of as a child, but on June 28, 1964, he launched what would become a prolific career.
